Coach Gregg Popovich will succeed Coach Mike Krzyzewski as the new head coach for the USA Men’s Basketball team. Since 1992’s Dream Team, the USA Men’s Basketball team has built a reputation and legacy internationally. Coach Chuck Daly made history with some of the world’s greatest players such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Coach K was an understudy of Chuck Daly in 1992. Krzyzewski also gained knowledge from his own coaching experience at ACC’s powerhouse, Duke University. In 2005, Coach K took over USA Basketball. He led the team to a 75-1 record and two Olympic Gold Medals.
Now it is Popovich’s turn. Popovich has won 5 NBA Championships and a 1,022-470 record as the San Antonio Spurs head coach. When asked about the legacy of Krzyzewski, Popovich said “I will do my utmost to maintain the high standards of success, class and character established by Jerry, Coach K and the many players who have sacrificed their time on behalf of USA Basketball.” Good luck Coach Popovich as you lead our USA Men’s Basketball Team.
