The sports world has always been a safe haven for athletes. Hall of Famers for every sport have said when they are playing their sport, they block out all other distractions. A player’s love and passion for their sport takes over while they play. So much happens with an athlete behind the scenes that fans may never be able to fully appreciate what they do. When fans see an athlete performing their craft, they are seeing the final product of the athlete. The athlete knows all of the blood, sweat and tears he/she put into perfecting their craft. Therefore, when an athlete decides to celebrate or show their emotions, they are coming from a passionate mentality.
There is one player in particular that has been in the public eye when it comes to showing his emotions. The NFL superstar Cam Newton has been the topic of discussion when it comes to celebrating after a touchdown. The dance move that Cam performs is called The Dab. When a person Dabs they place their head in a forward motion on the inside of their arm. The dance move is similar to when an individual sneezes in their arm. Cam Newton started to do this has his celebration dance every time he scored a touchdown.
When Cam started to do the Dab, people took it in a negative manner. Players throughout NFL history have had their own celebration style. Some players received penalties in the past because their celebration was offensive. Cam Newton doing the Dab is far from offensive. Critics of Cam said he was showing off and the celebration showed he lacked humbleness. While Cam heard all of the conversations about his celebration style, he kindly ignored his critics and played his game.
Cam may not be everyone’s favorite athlete, but we must give him credit for what he has done as an ambassador for the NFL. Every time he steps on the football field he gives his all to the game. People seemingly forget the second part of his touchdown celebration when he gives a football to a child. Children in every stadium he played at wanted to get close to the end zone just to have the opportunity to get a football. As fans, we should not be negative towards our athletes, but appreciate all that they do for the game.
